10 Ways You Can Grow Closer to God This Week

One of the biggest problems Christian SAHMs have is making time each day to grow closer to God. Our days are so hectic that we may not even realize He hasn’t gotten any of our time until we are in bed and it is “too late.”

Is this you??

Luckily, God has provided us with tons of ways to grow in our relationship with Him! Let’s look at a few that are outlined in scripture.

10 simple ways that a busy SAHM can start growing closer to God right away!

Bible Time

Another great way to grow closer to God is to spend time reading or studying the Bible.

Why It Works:

Regular time in the word allows you to get to know more about who God is and what His will is.

There is some very helpful information in there!

The Bible is a physical record packed with things that God wanted us to know. We can’t know it unless we read, learn, and study it!

What to Do:

If you can’t sit and read right now–wait, you can! Because here you are! Pick up the Bible instead of this post, I promise I won’t be offended!

You can even download the YouVersion Bible app and spend some time in God’s word while you are on the go.

I make time in the morning. While my little man is finishing up breakfast, I start reading. He knows that after breakfast he can go play while I finish my reading, and then we will play together!

I was NOT hopeful that this would work out but our routine has been going solid!

Bible time doesn’t have to be a full on hour each day if that isn’t feasible for you right now. Take a second to shoot up a prayer asking for wisdom, and then just read one chapter–or even a few verses. Anything is better than nothing!

Prayer is one of the easiest ways to grow closer to God (if you don’t feel that way yet, hop over and read how to make prayer feel more natural).

Why It Works:

This is one of the only methods that you can practice anywhere, any time.

Prayer offers us a direct line to God through our Savior Jesus Christ. How powerful is that?! Why not take advantage of such a gracious opportunity?

What to Do:

In the Bible, Jesus often goes off on His own to pray, and even teaches us how (Matthew 6:9-13). He gives the Our Father as a great outline, and also instructs us to ask for things in His name (John 14:13).

Start there, and take a few minutes right now! Just talk to God as you would to a friend. Tell Him what you need help with and say thank You!

You can easily grow closer to God through true Biblical meditation. If you don’t know what that is, make sure to join my Facebook group and check out this video!

Why It Works:

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Joshua 1:8

In prayer we are able to talk to God, but with meditation we are able to listen.

Focusing deeply on His word and concentrating on what it means is crucial to understanding what we are called to do.

What to Do:

First of all, rid your mind of any set ideas you may have had about meditation meaning “clearing your mind.” The Bible does not say to do that.

In fact, you will find that scripture doesn’t say anything about sitting silently for a half hour focusing on nothing–thank God, right? Because kids are not letting that happen!

It does mean to think pensively, to murmur, to converse with oneself, or to talk (according to Strong’s Concordance in relation to the verses listed in the above video!).

Choose the passage in scripture you’d like to use, and then spend time actively thinking about and talking yourself through what it means–not only in relation to the rest of the passage/Bible, but its relevance in your own life.

I’ll be honest: this is not something I have delved into quite yet–but I’m happy to share what I do know!

When I was a new Christian, I didn’t really know anything about fasting.

Once I started to learn and become more curious, I was pregnant and nursing for a while (I don’t suggest fasting if you are currently in one of the positions!)

I do plan to delve into this area of my faith more now that I am able, so stay tuned for a post about that!

Why It Works:

Through fasting, you are both literally and metaphorically choosing reliance on God and trusting Him to sustain your every need.

As with so many things in scripture, the physical act of fasting parallels the spiritual element. You are recognizing God is as essential to your life as the physical nourishment required for survival.

There are many different reasons to fast. Here are just a few listed in the Bible:

  • To seek the Lord (Daniel 9:3)
  • As a form of worship (Luke 2:37)
  • As a sign of mourning (Esther 4:3)
  • Committing [elders] to the Lord (Acts 14:23)

What To Do:

As I mentioned above, this isn’t something I am well versed in. The advice I received was to start small–maybe skip one meal or go just a few hours.

I would definitely suggest that you speak with your doctor before starting any kind of fast. I’d also recommend grabbing someone you trust from your church to help walk you through it.

There are actually two different ways that church helps you grow closer to God: going to church and being the church.

I am going to explain why both are necessary!

Why It Works:

Going to church is important, even though many like to argue the fact that they don’t need a physical church to worship God. He is the one who set the design in place for corporate worship and teaching. The physical church is still very much a part of the Christian design for living!

Being the church is mainly using the spiritual gifts we received as we were adopted into sonship to edify and build up our Christian brothers and sisters, as well as grow the number of believers.

What To Do:

First, find a church! If you are not already a member of a church, I encourage you to go out and try a few of the churches in your area. Pray about it, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, go more than once, talk to some of the members and the leadership team. When you find a good fit, inquire about being a member and getting involved!

As for being the church, you can start right away! Show God’s love to those around you–that is what sets us apart as His children, after all. Make sure to find out what your spiritual gifts are if you don’t know yet, and speak with the leaders at your church to see where you can start building and/or using them.

In case you are here because you don’t know, tithing is financial giving to support the church’s mission of spreading the gospel. Many churches do this differently–some collect during the service while others allow for a more private giving on your own time, or even online!

Why It Works:

Tithing requires dependence on God. Trusting Him with our money can be a big challenge for some! Actively trusting God with our family finances and choosing to take a risk in the spirit of furthering His kingdom will surely bring us closer to Him and is a testament to our faith.

What to Do:

It is obvious that churches need money to function. We can do our part financially by making sure we are contributing–but what’s really important is giving joyfully and the condition of our heart when we choose to give.

Whether you are being discipled by someone or discipling someone else, you are an active participant in the Great Commission:

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)

Why It Works:

When you are being discipled, you are learning more about God, the Bible, and Christianity in general.

You are able to form a relationship with someone–trusting that they are rooted in Christ–and can ask questions or get advice when you are struggling to understand more complicated issues of faith.

When you disciple someone else, you are sharing the Gospel, being obedient, and serving God and others.

Have you ever heard that you know you fully understand something when you are able to teach it? Think of all the opportunities will arise for you to learn and grow in your faith through the questions of a new believer!

What to Do:

If you haven’t yet been discipled, I’d suggest reaching out to someone you know from church (or your Bible study, small group, etc.), that has a saving relationship with Christ and knowledge of the Bible, to see if they would be willing/able to do it or to point you in the direction of someone who could.

If YOU are that person who could, consider asking a leader at your church how to begin the process of discipling someone else. You can take steps toward this today by simply shooting an email asking for information!

They should also be able to help you find someone within your church who is interested in being discipled. You could even reach out directly to someone in your personal life who may be interested.

Serving is a great way to grow closer to God! Not only through serving Him, but also through serving His children and all of His creation.

Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into His presence with singing!
Psalm 100:2

Why It Works:

Jesus was the ultimate example of service. He helped everyone who asked, and died even for those who didn’t. He did everything that God asked of Him and always made time to spend with His Father when He took on human form.

Following the example of Christ always brings us closer to God. Going with a willing heart to help or serve the church, unbelievers, or any combination, will bring glory to God and allow us to get to know Him even better as we navigate these situations with His help and guidance.

What to Do:

There is always something we can do to help others! Look around–who needs help?

Can you fill a need within your church? Are any of your friends adjusting to a new baby? Does your SO need support or encouragement for anything right now?

Pay attention to the people around you and what they need. It doesn’t have to be a huge time consuming effort–sometimes just lending an ear or offering prayer will be the boost that someone needs!

This may be obvious, but in order to grow closer to God, we need to build a relationship with Him. He is a personal, intimate God who is concerned about and very involved with His creation!

Why It Works:

Think about how you’d build a relationship with someone: you start off not knowing them at all, total strangers. Then you talk–as questions, get to know one another, listen to what they have to say.

As you start learning more about this person, you begin caring about their needs and their happiness. You develop a bond, a friendship, and grow to love one another.

It works the same way with God! Imagine how much more powerful and loving a relationship with the Creator of the Universe would be.

The more we get to know and understand God, the more we will want to learn about Him.

What to Do:

An easy answer here is to simply start taking action on this list!

Especially important to our relationship with God is accepting Jesus in our hearts as our Savior and payment for our sin, and repentance.

Repentance could probably have it’s own category here as well, but it also fits into many of these categories (prayer, love, and this one, to name a few!)

It is a crucial step in building an initial relationship with God, as well as a cleansing step for those already walking with Him in intimacy.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
James 4:8

To start building a relationship with God, you just need to be willing, and He will meet you right where you’re at.

Talk to Him through prayer, listen to Him through meditation, get to know Him through studying His word…

He will absolutely show up if you make an effort!

The most important way to grow closer to God is through love! Love for Him, and love for others.

Why It Works:

God tells us that love is what sets us apart from the rest of the world and identifies us as His.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
John 13:34-35

None of the things on this list can be truly done without love–because if they are, they don’t count.

It is the love for God in our hearts that motivates us to desire closeness with Him in the first place, and it’s that love that allows us to build up our Christian brothers and sisters and shine His light to those who are still in the dark.

What to Do:

The Bible gives us lots of ways to put our love into practice.

Sometimes loving others can be one of the most difficult things God asks us to do–especially when it comes to loving our enemies.

But we have a Savior who has been through it and is there to help us whenever we ask!

This post is a great place to start if you aren’t sure what loving others should look like right now in your life.
